If you’ve ever wondered why, it’s because the context around us - the surroundings we see - are a cue for the brain, telling it what it should be looking for or doing in specific spaces.

You might notice this in habits like putting the TV on and scrolling through social media every time you sit on your living room couch, reaching for junk food without fail around 3pm, or leaving unfinished notes and to do lists at your desk (if you work from home.)

When these unconscious behaviors are already established in a specific space, it’s hard to deprogram them. 

This is why a room refresh can be absolute magic for boosting whatever fresh start you’re after. 

By simply rearranging a space, splashing it with some new color or decor elements, or creating a new system for organizing, you’re giving your brain a clean slate to work with.

You’re giving it a new foundation to associate with new behaviors.

Here are some of the most effective ways to give your space a refresh and reinforce your New Year’s fresh start:

  1. Rearrange the room. Wherever you want to change your behaviors (whether it’s to adopt a new habit or reduce an unwanted habit,) a simple rearrangement of your furniture can do wonders. It makes your brain think just enough about “what am I supposed to be doing in here?” that you can from a place of consciousness reprogram what you want to use that room for.
  2. Redecorate the room. I’m sure you’ve felt the power of a room’s decor - how it establishes ambience and makes you feel a certain way. Changing or refreshing your decor can do the same for your goals. It primes the brain in the same way as rearranging, but it also has the added benefit of creating a mood, whether it’s to bolster your motivation, create some calm, increase focus, evoke playfulness, etc.
  3.  Get organized. Creating a new organization system signals to the brain that there’s a process, an order of operations that needs to be adopted. It also clears up any mental clutter that comes from looking at a hodgepodge of stuff or piles of papers. Start with a clean space, and a clean brain will follow.
  4. Design it with your goals in mind. Add visual cues to your environment that will encourage new behaviors, like putting your vitamins next to your coffeemaker in the morning, or getting your workout clothes ready at night and putting them on your dresser. Conversely, you can remove visual cues that are prompting habits you want to remove, like removing junk food from your home. Get creative - take a moment to look around your space and notice what triggers you see and ask yourself if they’re helping or hindering your goals.
